Contestants must be a FSFA member or an employee of a member shop
The contest will be held in conjunction with the annual convention.
Each contestant will receive a tool box list after their paid entry form is received by the contest chair. Contestants are not allowed to use any tools or products not on the list. Doing so will result in disqualification, entry fee will not be refunded.
All fresh product and hard goods are provided. Each contestant will receive identical material; usage is at the discretion of each designer. Sharing or trading between contestants in not allowed.
The competition consists of 3 designs to be completed in 2 hours. Each contestant is required to clean their work area, display the 3 designs with their assigned number. A written description of each design using proper floral terminology as defined by the “AIFD Book of Floral Terminology” is to be completed by each designer.
Each contestant should report thirty minutes prior to the competition for instructions and materials related to the competition. Any questions will be answered at this time by the moderator.
Each design will be scored based on the following, Category Interpretation, Creativity, Scale (proportion), Unity (harmony and texture), Balance (physical and visual), Focal Emphasis, Line (movement and rhythm), Depth, Color (harmony, balance and rhythm), and Mechanics (professional application). Each category is worth a maximum of 10 points.
The DOY winner will be announced during the President’s banquet.
The winner will receive the traveling trophy for one year, and a personal trophy. The first and second runners up will each receive a plaque.
The DOY winner will represent FSFA at the Southern Retail Florist’s Association, designer of the year competition. The winner will receive travel and hotel reimbursement up to $600.00. The DOY winner must, at the time of the competition, be a current FSFA member or employed by a current member shop. If the DOY winner is not available or does not meet the requirements, the first runner up will compete at Southern Retail.
The DOY winner will also present an education program at the next mid-season, (or annual convention if not able to present at mid-season). The program should be a minimum of 45-50 minutes. It is the DOY winner’s responsibility to provide a procurement list to the convention chair person.
No entries will be accepted after the published deadline.
